Owens Corning Duration Review
The Owens Corning Duration is the number two selling architectural shingle in America. It is the main competitor to GAF Timberline HDZ, and in some ways it is the better product.
I have installed both side by side on the same street. Here is how Duration holds up.
Quick Verdict
Duration is a slightly more premium shingle than Timberline HDZ. The SureNail fastening strip is genuinely better technology. The color depth is a step above. But you pay more for it.
If Timberline is the Honda Civic, Duration is the Honda Accord. Same reliability, a little nicer inside, a little more money. Both are solid choices. Neither will let you down.[1]
What It Costs
Owens Corning Duration costs $5.00 to $7.50 per square foot installed. That puts it about $0.50 to $1.00 per square foot above Timberline HDZ in most markets.[2]
| Measurement | Low | Mid | High |
|---|---|---|---|
| Per square foot | $5.00 | $6.25 | $7.50 |
| Per square | $500 | $625 | $750 |
| 2,000 sq ft home (typical) | $10,000 | $12,500 | $15,000 |
On a typical 2,000 square foot roof, you are looking at $1,000 to $2,000 more than Timberline HDZ. That gap is real but not huge. For some homeowners, the better look and SureNail tech are worth it.[4]

What I Like
SureNail is genuinely better fastening
I do not say this lightly. Most shingle "technologies" are marketing. SureNail is not. It is a woven fabric strip built into the nailing zone that gives the nail something to grip besides just asphalt and fiberglass.
In pull-through tests, SureNail consistently outperforms standard nailing zones. This matters in high-wind areas. If you are in a coastal market or somewhere with regular storms, this is a meaningful advantage.[1]
Better color depth
Owens Corning's TruDefinition color technology produces slightly richer, deeper colors than GAF's standard Timberline line. The difference is subtle from the ground, but it is there. If you put Duration and Timberline HDZ side by side on a table, Duration looks better.
On your roof from the street? Most people would not notice. But if aesthetics matter to you, this is a real edge.
Strong contractor network
Owens Corning's Preferred and Platinum contractor programs are well-established. Finding a certified installer in most metro areas is not difficult. Not quite as wide as GAF's network, but close.
What I Do Not Like
More expensive for similar performance
Duration and Timberline HDZ have the same wind rating (130 mph), the same fire rating (Class A), and similar lifespans. The extra $1,000-$2,000 for a typical home buys you better color and SureNail. Whether that is worth it depends on your priorities and your budget.
For a homeowner who just needs a solid roof at a fair price, Timberline HDZ does the same job for less.
Fewer color options in some markets
GAF offers 20+ colors. OC offers 15+. In practice, your local distributor may stock only 8-10 Duration colors versus 12-15 Timberline colors. If you want a specific shade, you may need to special order Duration, which adds lead time.
Warranty Breakdown
Owens Corning offers two main warranty tiers on Duration shingles.[1]
| Warranty Tier | Installer Required | What It Covers |
|---|---|---|
| Preferred Protection | OC Preferred Contractor | Limited lifetime shingle warranty + 10-year workmanship coverage + 10-year tear-off cost coverage. |
| Platinum Protection | OC Platinum Preferred | Everything in Preferred + extended 25-year workmanship coverage + non-prorated 50-year material warranty. The top tier. |
The Preferred Protection warranty is solid and comparable to GAF's Silver Pledge. Platinum is the premium option, similar to Golden Pledge. Both require a certified installer, same as GAF. See our full roofing warranty guide for a side-by-side comparison of all manufacturer programs.
Owens Corning Certification Tiers
Preferred Contractor
The standard OC certification. Contractor meets insurance requirements, completes training, and agrees to OC installation standards. Unlocks Preferred Protection warranty. This is the equivalent of GAF Certified.
Platinum Preferred Contractor
The top tier. Requires a proven track record, advanced training, and a commitment to customer service standards. Unlocks Platinum Protection warranty. This is the equivalent of GAF Master Elite.[1]
Same caveat I give for GAF: certification tells you the contractor has invested in the program. It does not guarantee they are better than an uncertified roofer. But it does get you access to better warranty coverage.
Duration vs. Timberline HDZ: Head to Head
This is the comparison everyone wants. Here is how they stack up.[1][2]
| Feature | OC Duration | GAF Timberline HDZ |
|---|---|---|
| Installed cost (per sq ft) | $5.00-$7.50 | $4.50-$7.00 |
| Wind rating | 130 mph | 130 mph |
| Fire rating | Class A | Class A |
| Nailing tech | SureNail (fabric strip) | LayerLock (wide zone) |
| Color depth | Slightly better | Good |
| Color options | 15+ | 20+ |
| Availability | Wide | Widest |
| Best warranty | Platinum Protection | Golden Pledge |
Bottom line: If budget is the priority, go with Timberline HDZ. If aesthetics and nailing technology matter more, go with Duration. If you want to save even more, check out CertainTeed Landmark. You cannot go wrong with any of the three.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Owens Corning Duration better than GAF Timberline?
They are very close. Duration has slightly better color depth and the SureNail strip is a genuinely superior fastening system. But Timberline HDZ costs less and is more widely available. For most homeowners, either is a solid choice. Duration edges ahead on aesthetics. Timberline wins on price and availability.
How much does an Owens Corning Duration roof cost?
Owens Corning Duration costs $5.00-$7.50 per square foot installed, including labor, materials, and tear-off. For a typical 2,000 sq ft home, that is $10,000 to $15,000 total. Use our roof cost calculator for a personalized estimate.[2]
What is SureNail technology?
SureNail is a fabric strip woven into the nailing zone of Duration shingles. It gives the nail something to grip besides just asphalt, which improves holding power in high winds. It also provides a visible guide so installers know exactly where to nail. It is one of the few shingle technologies that is not just marketing.[1]
